Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Farah Khan, also known as “Fourmatte,” is a contemporary painter primarily working in acrylics.
Art and design have been integral to Farah’s life. Color, light and form are distinct design elements that she recognized in early in her childhood whether it be the way the spools of colored polyester thread lit up in her face when her mother would sew in afternoon light or the way the shapes of chipped ceiling paint in her family’s one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment in the 80’s-90’s resembled faces and animals.
Farah tries to convey these interactions through painting in order to achieve an understanding of what she is experiencing. She draws inspiration from the human experience and is influenced heavily by film, fashion photography, and vintage labels.
Farah attended Edward R. Murrow High School in Midwood, Brooklyn, which specializes in the arts and is known for its notable attendees, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, and Academy-award winning director, Darren Aronofsky.
It was during her high school years that she ardently developed her skillset as she spent hours in photography darkrooms ( both color & black and white ), ceramics and painting studios at her school, perfecting her skills across several media.
Farah later went on to graduate from CUNY Brooklyn College with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and chemistry in 2010.
Growing up in a diverse and ever-changing environment like New York City has a offered a unique set of experiences that has shaped her aesthetic and overall consciousness as an individual.
